Strixa vs Metabase
An honest capability comparison. No invented customer logos or fake benchmark scores.
Who is Metabase?
Metabase is an open source BI tool known for its approachable SQL interface and self-hosted deployment option. It is popular with technical teams who want to quickly explore data without a heavy BI platform. Metabase has a commercial version (Metabase Pro/Enterprise) with embedding features and additional governance. It connects directly to databases and runs queries live. Metabase does not have a formal semantic layer; instead, it uses Saved Questions and Models to organize reusable queries.
Overlap
Where Strixa and Metabase overlap
Both platforms cover some of the same ground. Here is what Strixa verifiably supports in this area.
- Both platforms connect to relational databases and allow teams to build and share dashboards
- Both offer interactive charts including bar, line, pie, and table views
- Both support self-hosted deployment options
- Both have some form of permissions and access control
- Both support embedding analytics into external applications
Differentiating angles
Where Strixa takes a different approach
- Strixa has a formal semantic layer: dimensions, measures, joins, and row-level security are declared once in a published model and enforced in every query. Metabase uses Saved Questions and native query results as reusable entities, without a strict semantic contract.
- Strixa's multi-tenant SaaS design enforces per-row tenant isolation in every service and table. Metabase multi-tenancy in embedded scenarios requires careful use of Sandboxing (Enterprise feature) which applies row-level filters based on user attributes.
- Strixa's JWT embedding is a simple API call (POST /embed/token) returning a dashboard-scoped token with optional customer_id for RLS. Metabase embedding uses a separate signed token approach with iframe parameters.
- Strixa includes document reports as a distinct surface: multi-page, paper-layout, headers, footers, and scheduled PDF delivery by email. Metabase does not have a document report builder.
- Strixa bundles ETL pipelines for extract-based ingestion. Metabase is query-only against existing databases with no built-in ETL layer.
Evaluation checklist
Questions to ask during your evaluation
Use these when comparing any BI platform, including Strixa.
- Does your team need a formal semantic layer that enforces metric definitions across all charts and users?
- How does the platform handle per-customer data isolation in embedded scenarios at scale?
- What is the production support model for self-hosted Metabase versus a supported commercial deployment?
- Can you produce multi-page document reports with custom layouts alongside interactive dashboards?
- How are role-based access controls managed across multiple teams or customer organizations?
- Does the platform include built-in ETL or do you need to manage a separate data pipeline?
- What happens to charts when an underlying table schema changes?
