Semantic-first AI Native Enterprise BI platform

Compare / Power BI

Strixa vs Power BI

An honest capability comparison. No invented customer logos or fake benchmark scores.

Who is Power BI?

Microsoft Power BI is one of the most widely deployed enterprise BI tools in the world. It is tightly integrated into the Microsoft ecosystem, including Azure, Excel, Teams, and Fabric. Power BI supports DirectQuery, import mode, and composite models. Its DAX language defines measures and calculated columns. Power BI Embedded allows developers to embed visuals in external applications, and the platform has added Copilot AI features through Microsoft's OpenAI partnership.

Overlap

Where Strixa and Power BI overlap

Both platforms cover some of the same ground. Here is what Strixa verifiably supports in this area.

  • Both platforms offer a semantic or business layer where measures and dimensions are defined centrally
  • Both support interactive dashboards with a wide variety of chart types
  • Both provide some form of row-level security for controlling data access by user
  • Both have embedding capabilities for showing analytics in external applications
  • Both offer scheduled data refresh and email notification features

Differentiating angles

Where Strixa takes a different approach

  • Strixa is designed as a multi-tenant SaaS system from the start: tenant isolation is enforced at the database row level in every service. Power BI's multi-tenant embedding (A-SKU or Premium capacity) requires careful configuration and is primarily designed for single-organization enterprise deployment.
  • Strixa's JWT embed flow is a single POST /embed/token call that returns a short-lived token scoped to a dashboard and optional customer. Power BI Embedded requires Azure Active Directory token management and capacity allocation.
  • Strixa includes a document report surface (multi-page, paper-layout, PDF export, scheduled email) as a first-class BI surface distinct from dashboards. Power BI paginated reports exist but require separate licensing and Report Builder tooling.
  • Strixa bundles ETL pipelines for warehouse ingestion. Power BI uses Power Query for import-mode data prep, but production ETL typically requires separate Azure Data Factory or Fabric pipelines.
  • Strixa is a self-hosted or cloud-deployed Node.js/MySQL system with no Microsoft dependency. Power BI requires Microsoft 365 or Azure licensing for most production scenarios.

Evaluation checklist

Questions to ask during your evaluation

Use these when comparing any BI platform, including Strixa.

  1. What licensing tier is required for embedding Power BI into an external product versus using it internally?
  2. How does per-customer row-level security work in embedded scenarios at scale?
  3. What is the per-seat or capacity cost model at your projected user count?
  4. Does the platform support a formal semantic layer that all charts query, versus per-chart DAX formulas?
  5. Can you deliver print-ready multi-page PDF reports from the same data model as dashboards?
  6. How does the platform handle tenant isolation if you are building a multi-tenant SaaS product?
  7. What is the deployment model: cloud-only, hybrid, or self-hosted?
